Call For Papers Extended to January 20, 2010! 35th Annual Economic & Business Historical Society Conference MAY 27-29, 2010
Proposals are now being taken for the 35th annual conference of the Economic and Business Historical Society, to be held at the Hotels do Bom Jesus, Braga, Portugal on May 27-29, 2010. Proposals for presentations on any aspect of business or economic history are welcome.
The Society’s conference, held each year in a location of historical significance, offers participants an opportunity for intellectual interchange within a collegial interdisciplinary group of scholars from around the world. Special conference rates are available for graduate students and early researchers (4 years or less since doctorate earned). Papers presented at the conference may be submitted for consideration by the Society's peer reviewed journal, Essays in Economic and Business History, edited by Janice Traflet, Bucknell University.
Opening and closing sessions for the conference have been finalized.
The conference will open with "The Divergence Debate: A Chinese
Perspective" featuring Professors Li Bozhon (Tsinghua University), Patrick
O´Brien (London School of Economics and Political Science) and Jaime Reis (Instituto
de Ciências Sociais – University of Lisbon). The conference will close with “The Crisis of 2008 and the Crisis of 1931. What have we learned?" with Portuguese Minister of Finance, Professor Fernando Teixeira dos Santos (Faculdade de Economia – University of Porto), and Professors Michael Bordo (Rutgers University) and Jaime Reis (Instituto de Ciências Sociais – University of Lisbon).
The Society seeks proposals for both individual papers and panel sessions. Proposals for individual papers should include an abstract of no more than 500 words, a brief curriculum vita, postal and email addresses, and telephone and fax numbers. Panel proposals should also suggest a title and a panel chair. Submissions are welcome from graduate students and non-academic affiliates.
Proposals are considered with the understanding that acceptance is conditional upon at least one named author registering for the conference and being present at the time designated in the conference program. To be included in the published program or to be eligible for publication in Essays in Economic and Business History, a paper must have been presented at the conference by at least one named author.
EBHS cannot guarantee that an applicant will be granted entry into Portugal. Attendees should check the requirements for nationals from their respective country for entry into the European Union. U.S. citizens generally do not require visas for short duration stays in most European countries. Scholars from countries requiring an entry visa into Portugal must apply early and make any necessary arrangements with the local Portuguese Consulate.
The deadline for submission of proposals is January 20, 2010.
