an informal presidential address following the EBHS banquet
Jack amused his listeners with anecdotes of Abner Doubleday's service with the Union
artillery during the battle for Fort Sumter in April 1861.
During the battle Doubleday ordered fire directed at Moultrie House on Sullivan’s
Island. An aide asked why he would bombard the boarding house where he lived when at Fort Moultrie and Doubleday is
reported to have said "that place served the worst food I ever put into my mouth!" |
